Don't forget that all cabinets/shelves should be earthquake resistent. We made do with very low (2-or-3-shelf) systems made of shelf-wood (from a lumber yard; they'll cut it for you) held up by plain bricks (same source or Home Depot). One brick height below lowest shelf keeps it off the floor; then stack bricks according to desired height of shelf & place second shelf. Upper shelf requires book holders (if for books).
